Zip Code

Zip codes are employed by the Postal Services in US as an integral part of a US address so that the mail can be directed to the appropriate individual easily.

The term ZIP stands for "Zone improvement plan". Every zip code has five numbers in their basic format. The format was modified in 1983 to carry a ZIP plus 4 format meaning the basic 5 numbers followed by another 4 numbers with a hyphen setting them apart in the middle.

Zip code of Orlando travel city was introduced by the US postal service in the year 1943. Robert Moon, a postal worker was behind the evolution of the zip code as a viable means of perfecting mail delivery. However, it was only in 1963 that zip codes became prevalent throughout the country.

If we take 16820 which is the Zip code for Pennsylvania, the first three digits i.e., 168 represent the sectional center and the next two digits i.e., 20 is the postal code representing Pennsylvania.

Even after Zip codes were introduced across the United States in 1963, it was used to service only first class mail and later, in 1967 all postal articles started using the Zip code for delivery.

The Zip plus 4 system currently in vogue uses the additional 4 digits for identifying the specific geographic region. The code itself is transferred to a bar code where the postal sorting machinery ensures the mail going to the appropriate location. The full 12 digit zip code will ensure correct delivery when you intend sending a mail to anyone in the US.

The geographical area within the country is represented by the first digit in the zip code and can point to a group - such as states. Using the subsequent two digits, the mail moves to an appropriate hub to be sorted again. The 4th and 5th digits points to the specific address within a given region.
