Silver Springs

You would have planned that long awaited vacation trip to the Disney World, Orlando.

While drawing up your itinerary, you can also look for a number of other attractions in the vicinity of Disney World which offer similar entertainment and ambience. Silver Springs, Marion County, Florida is one such Orlando travel attraction.

Silver Springs is among the largest artificial spring formations anywhere in the world and produces some 550 million gallons crystal clear potable water every day. Silver springs are also the headwater for Silver river, which joins the St John's River through Ocklwaha River.

Since the middle of the 19th century, the sheer beauty of the silver springs started attracting large number of visitors. In 1870, curious visitors were provided with rides in glass bottomed boats. In modern times, the headwater area of Silver Springs stands transformed as a mammoth nature park with an array of exhibits and rides.

Once you arrive here, you can enjoy riding the glass- bottom boats. Licensed captains man the boats and take you on a tour of all the major spring formations. Silver springs have a 10,000 year history and "Fort King River Cruise" will help you familiarize yourself with this. Number of interactive entertainment is also available over the course of the cruise.

"The Lost River Voyage" on the other hand is themed to transport the visitors back in time for a taste of the wild Florida as it stood several thousand years ago, untamed and untouched. Cypress trees of towering height adore the Riverbanks and some of them are over 500 years old. Alligators, heron, osprey, turtles and similar wildlife can be seen feeding their infants and basking in natural habitat.

Though Silver Springs do figure under Orlando Florida travel attractions, remember this theme park is some 90 miles to the north from Orlando. For this reason, it is likely that some Orlando vacationers may not catch this attraction on the radar. But, if you are equipped with an Orlando Card providing admission to several attractions like Fun Spot, and WonderWorks, Silver Springs is included in the Card.

Once you are there you are bound to enjoy attractions from a diverse range. With the park occupying 350 acres of real estate, you will never have a dearth of opportunity to explore. Do remember to stop by at the botanical gardens which host more than 100 plant varieties and enjoy the floral display in the course of a leisurely walk on the lovely pathway.
